This section covers the combined Medical and Surgical (Med/Surg) Unit and Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

KCH has a 31-bed Acute Care unit that provides care to both medical and surgical patients.  Within this unit are five (5) universal beds, which can be used and are equipped to care for critically ill (ICU) patients.

In addition to cardiac monitoring with in the ICU, we have ambulatory cardiac monitoring (telemetry) available for the medical and surgical patients.
This unit also provides care for swing bed and observation patients.

Patients have general, as well as specialty surgery such as orthopedic, gastroenterologic, and urologic surgery.

The age range of patients cared for on this unit is pediatric to geriatric.

Care is provided by and/or under the direction of Registered Nurses with the assistance of Licensed Practical Nurses, Patient Care Assistants and ward clerks.

Staff training includes Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Critical Care Certification.

Monitoring and interventions are provided for patients at risk for impaired skin integrity, falls and pneumonia.

Multidisciplinary teams comprised of Nursing, Social Services/Discharge Planning, Dietary and Rehabilitation Services meet to discuss patient needs and plan of care.

Bedside shift reporting has been implemented to encourage patient involvement in their care and enhance communication between providers.

Hourly rounding initiative provides frequent assessments by the nursing staff to ensure patient safety and improve patient satisfaction by making sure all patient needs are met.

The new Family Room located on the ACU provides a comfortable setting for family and friends of patients who may be waiting or need a moment to relax.
