UPMC Hamot Continues Investment in Regional Healthcare with Medical Park in Mt. Jewett
In the Summer J. Gary Rhodes, Vice President of UPMC Hamot and CEO of Kane Community Hospital, an affiliate of UPMC Hamot, announced that UPMC Hamot would begin construction of a new physician center in Mt. Jewett to improve access to quality healthcare and to better serve residents of the area.
Site preparation has begun at the 20-22 W. Main Street location in Mt. Jewett. Foundation will be laid and the structure closed in by mid-November.
At a recent groundbreaking, Jim Fiorenzo, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, UPMC Hamot told Mt. Jewett officials that “we consider this Medical Center in Mt. Jewett an investment in community healthcare for the region. It’s important that our regional investment starts in the communities where our patients live. And, that our investments enhance access to primary care and specialty clinics in an area served by KCH, our first fully UPMC Hamot affiliated community hospital. Should a patient ever need to leave the community for KCH care and services or the need for tertiary care, that continuity will be extended throughout the UPMC Hamot health system.”
The Center will be connected to both KCH and UPMC Hamot via high-speed fiber optics allowing use of the electronic medical record system of KCH and the expansion of telemedicine services provided by UPMC Hamot and UPMC Pittsburgh.
“The Mt. Jewett center is an example of why UPMC Hamot was a critical next step for us at KCH” noted Rhodes. It’s about establishing partnerships that make possible human and financial capital that otherwise would not be available to our area.” Rhodes stated.
“Mt. Jewett is very important to our mission ‘to serve’ and to bring care closer to our patients. With this investment in community healthcare, we plan to expand family practice, add internal medicine, OB/GYN, and weekend walk-in hours,” Rhodes noted. “None of this would be possible without the capital resources of UPMC Hamot."
Fiorenzo said the “Mt. Jewett Center is a key investment in building a strong foundation for regional care.” The first joint venture between UPMC Hamot and KCH was UPMC Hamot Medical Park in Johnsonburg, a service of KCH, "With our investment in Mt. Jewett and surrounding areas we hope to enhance care and remain strong for patients, their families and communities for generations to come”.
Mt. Jewett Mayor Robin LeViere stated that "the Borough is really looking forward to the Center. It will be a real asset. Over the past several years Mt. Jewett has suffered business losses and hardship and this Center will be a boon for Mt. Jewett. It will enhance the aesthetics of our Main Street. The community is welcoming this access to care with open arms."
The family medicine practices of Linda Rettger, M.D. and Eric Asp, PA-C will relocate to the new facility on Main Street in the commercial area of Mt. Jewett.
Linda Myers, Owner of Myers Trucking and Board of member of both Kane Community Hospital and UPMC Hamot, noted that, “Good things are happening in Mt. Jewett. This is a needed 'shot in the arm' for our town. The community is so excited for this connection to KCH and the enhanced services available with multiple exam rooms and parking. Dr. Rettger deserves a new place for her dedication to her patients for over three decades."
Sees Construction Inc. is the facility contractor. The opening of the Center is anticipated in early 2012.The 2,900 square foot permanent building will allow multiple health care providers to see patients at the same time. The facility will have six exam rooms and a minor procedure room, in addition to support and wait areas.
