KCH Cardiac Rehab & Wellness Offers Fresh Start for a Healthier Lifestyle in New Year!
A new program offered by KCH Cardiac Rehab and Wellness will help participants Drop 10 pounds or 10 percent of their body weight in 10 weeks.
Participants can enroll in Drop 10 in 10sm offered at KCH Cardiac Rehabilitation and Wellness through Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield and learn lifelong tools for weight management.
Studies show that reducing weight by 10 percent can reduce the risk for or improve management of chronic conditions associated with excess weight, such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.
Drop 10 in 10sm is a weight management program designed to help participants lose pounds or body weight percentage through an engaging program of optimal nutrition, regular exercise and behavior change. The program includes a combination of educational lectures, experiential activities, self-study, self-monitoring and personal goal setting.
The program is designed to help individuals move away from the “all or nothing” mentality of fad dieting to the philosophy of making meaningful and long-lasting nutrition, exercise and lifestyle changes.
"In view of the alarmingly high rates of overweight and obesity in all population groups, Highmark is making the prevention and treatment of excess weight a top priority,” said Jane Livingston, RD, LDN, CDE, program developer at Highmark. “With Drop 10 in 10sm, we are partnering with our Preventive Health Alliance sites to offer an effective approach to weight management that gives our members the tools, skills and support they need to make lasting, meaningful lifestyle changes.”
When it comes to weight loss, there's no lack of fad diets promising fast results. But such diets limit nutritional intake, can be unhealthy and tend to fail in the long run. The key to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight isn't about short-term dietary changes. It's about a lifestyle that includes healthy eating, regular physical activity and balancing the number of calories consumed with the number of calories used.
Drop 10 in 10sm classes begin Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at 4 p.m. and will be offered every Tuesday for ten weeks. There is a small materials fee for Highmark members and a program fee for non-Highmark participants. For information on the program or to register, call KCH Cardiac Rehabilitation and Wellness at (814) 837-4779.
Throughout the ten weeks, participants are encouraged to make the right choices. Private weekly weigh-ins and measurements will be assessed and recorded. Drop 10 in 10sm is not an exercise class but information and education.
Some of the information sessions include: Moving toward change, Portion Control, Making Smart Choices, How to build your plan of attack, Having the Proper Attitude and Ideas to engage exercise into a busy life. It's a motivationally-driven course. Participants are accountable for their success, which makes it more worthwhile. There is a little bit of "homework" involved from week to week, but it helps keep participants on task. All-in-all, it is a well-rounded approach to beginning a healthier life.
